What Happens to Your Body When You Start Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting sounds pretty simple: you spend some time eating and some time not eating.

But what is actually happening inside your body during those hours without food?

Your body doesn’t suddenly flip a switch to fasting at a certain time point after you eat. Instead, it gradually changes how it gets and uses energy as the time since your last meal increases.

Let’s take a look at what happens.

First: Your body uses the food you just ate

After you eat, your digestive system gets to work.

Your stomach and intestines break food down into smaller components that your body can absorb and use. Glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients make their way into the bloodstream and tissues where they’re needed.

Glucose from any carbohydrates you consumed becomes the body’s primary readily available fuel, and insulin rises to help move that glucose into your cells. Your body also begins storing some of that incoming energy for later

Protein is broken down into amino acids that your body can use to build and repair tissues and perform other important functions. (Fun fact: Unlike carbohydrate and fat, your body doesn’t have a dedicated storage form for excess protein.)

Fat can be used for energy, incorporated into tissues, or stored in adipose tissue for later use.

Think of this as your fed state: food is coming in, and your body’s job is to use and store those nutrients.

A few hours later: Your body starts using stored energy

As digestion winds down and your body finishes absorbing nutrients from your meal, it gradually begins relying more on fuel that was stored earlier.

One important source is glycogen, the storage form of glucose found primarily in your liver and muscles.

Your liver can break down stored glycogen and release glucose into the bloodstream to help maintain blood glucose between meals.

Your body gradually shifts toward using more fat

As even more time passes without eating, your body increasingly turns to stored fat for energy.

Fatty acids released from your fat tissue can be used directly by many tissues for energy. Meanwhile, your liver can use fatty acids to produce ketones, which become an increasingly important fuel source during longer periods without food.

This is sometimes described as your body switching from “sugar burning” to “fat burning.”

But that’s a little too simplistic.

Your body is always using a mixture of fuels. Liver glycogen is being used continuously between meals, and the rate at which it declines varies considerably. At the same time, fat oxidation is increasing gradually. These processes overlap.

The proportions simply change depending on things like how long you’ve gone without eating, your previous meal, your activity level, and your individual metabolism. Factors such as insulin sensitivity, body composition, fitness, hormones, and overall metabolic health can also influence how easily your body shifts between fuel sources.

What happens to insulin?

Insulin levels generally decrease when you’re not eating.

That makes sense when you think about insulin’s job.

After a meal, insulin helps your body use and store incoming nutrients. When no new nutrients are arriving, insulin levels fall, making it easier for your body to access stored energy.

This is a normal part of moving from the fed state into the fasted state.

What about blood sugar?

You might assume that if you’re not eating, your blood sugar should keep falling.

Fortunately, your body has other plans.

Your brain and other tissues still need a steady supply of energy, so your body works to maintain blood glucose even when you’re not eating.

Your liver helps by releasing stored glucose and, when needed, making new glucose from other substances.

This is why a healthy body can go several hours without food without blood glucose simply running out.

Why do some people feel shaky, hungry, or foggy?

This is where individual experience can vary quite a bit.

Some people feel perfectly fine going several hours without eating. Others may notice hunger, fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or what they describe as “brain fog.”

Those symptoms don’t automatically mean your blood sugar is dangerously low.

Hunger itself can be distracting. Caffeine, stress, poor sleep, exercise, and simply being accustomed to eating at certain times can also influence how you feel.

And there’s another possibility: you may not be getting enough energy overall.

If someone starts fasting but doesn’t eat enough during their eating window to meet their body’s needs, they may simply be under-fueled. That can make fasting feel much harder.

Your body can use stored energy, but that doesn’t mean everyone feels great while doing it.

Can your body have a hard time switching between fuels?

Your body has the ability to switch between using carbohydrate and fat for energy. This is part of what scientists call metabolic flexibility.

But metabolic flexibility isn’t an on-or-off switch, and brain fog alone doesn’t tell us that someone has poor metabolic flexibility.

Some people may find that longer periods without food feel uncomfortable, particularly when they’re first changing their eating pattern. Others adapt fairly easily.

If fasting consistently leaves you feeling shaky, exhausted, or unable to concentrate, that’s useful information.

You don’t need to push through miserable symptoms just to prove that your body can fast.

What about autophagy or “cellular cleanup”?

You’ve probably heard that fasting activates autophagy, sometimes described as your cells’ cleanup or recycling system.

That’s a real biological process.

Autophagy allows cells to break down and recycle damaged or unnecessary cellular components. Nutrient availability is one of the signals that influences this process, and fasting can stimulate pathways involved in autophagy.

When does autophagy start to occur?

Low levels of autophagy may begin somewhere between 12 and 16 hours of fasting. But it’s important to note that much of what we know about fasting and autophagy comes from cellular and animal research, and the timing and magnitude of autophagy in humans is much harder to measure.

Does a longer fast mean more benefits?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about intermittent fasting.

Your body changes during fasting, but more fasting isn’t automatically better.

The potential benefits of intermittent fasting depend on the overall eating pattern, how long and how often you fast, what you’re eating, whether you’re meeting your nutritional needs, and whether the approach actually works for you.

For some people, having a defined eating window makes it easier to avoid mindless evening eating or creates a routine that feels simple.

For others, fasting may lead to excessive hunger, low energy, difficulty getting enough protein or other nutrients, or an eating pattern that feels too restrictive.

Does it matter when you fast?

Research suggests that eating earlier in the day may have some metabolic advantages compared with eating later at night, particularly for blood sugar regulation.

Your body has a natural daily rhythm that affects how it processes food. And for this reason, your body tends to handle food better during the day than late at night.

But you don’t need an extreme fasting schedule to benefit from eating earlier. For many people, simply cutting back on late-night eating and allowing a reasonable overnight break from food may be a great place to start.

We love simple answers, but the truth is that your body is constantly adjusting, using energy from your most recent meal, tapping into stored fuel, and changing how it uses those fuels as time passes.
